Emdash in category slug

  • I have a problem. I am bringing a site that was not running on wordpress into wordpress. One of the things it needs is the ability to filter by category. All is well and good as far as that goes – it luckily uses the same basic URL structure that WP does to access category items (It uses “tags/category” and WP uses “category/category”). That is great.

    What is not so great is that the old site includes a few categories that have emdashes in their slugs. So if the old site has a category named “Candy & Suger” it has a slug “candy–sugar”.

    I cannot lose SEO on the old site, so I need to support emdashes in WP. But if I manually enter a category slug of “candy–sugar” into WP, it transforms it into “candy-sugar” and doesn’t work.

    Is there a way around that – a way to force WP to accept emdashes (–) ?
