Email will not send the reset link

i get the default message in the email for a password reset.. it says
“Hello! You asked us to reset your password for your account using the email address XXXX. If this was a mistake, or you didn’t ask for a password reset, just ignore this email and nothing will happen. To reset your password, visit the following address: Thanks! ” (all one line)

the XXXX actually displays the username, not email.. and the reset link does not appear in the email either.

it looks like its just sending the wordpress one and not the custom one.
