Hello, last night, I upgraded to jetpack 8.8 with no issues thankfully. I did that at just before midnight. I then did my daily posting at 12:05am, about the same time I usually post my blog. I had 368 characters in the excerpt field to generate the email to my subscribers. It was slightly longer than I normally use, but not the longest I’ve used before which was 415 characters. After I posted my blog, my own email attached to my site got the subscription email from Jetpack, so I assumed everyone else that’s subscribed to me got it. I got contacted by a number of people this morning who didn’t get it. I checked into it. No one got the email except me. I then trashed the post on my blog and reposted it with the same title, but no except this time just to be on the safe side for now in case you guys made a change to the excerpt field in this latest release? It posted fine again to Twitter and I got the email. Except this time I checked with three of my subscribers and each got it this time, when none of them got it last night. So for as far as I can tell, either (a) Jetpack email subscriptions was having an issue last night OR (b) There’s a new issue after 8.8 using the Jetpack excerpt field. Am wondering now if anyone else post anything last night and have this issue with subscriptions? I look forward to the reponse from the Jetpack team to see if they have any info behind this and why my email was the only one that went through.

    Hi –

I did see another report of a similar issue with using excerpts. Which post did you have this issue on?

There aren’t any connection errors with your site. Here’s my suggestion. Disconnect and Reconnect the Jetpack plugin.

If that doesn’t make a difference, go ahead and turn off your other plugins leaving only Jetpack activated. This is going to let you know if something else is running interference.

Well, first the post was my latest, “What is your language of love?” Second, I deleted the post this morning and then re-added it and did not use excerpts and it worked fine and all my subscribers got the automatic generated post. Third, I don’t have any plugins enabled that affect posting. Fourth, the site had been disconnected and reconnected. So, the question still is, did Jetpack modify anything in 8.8 in their coding around Excerpts? I plan tonight to add a 200 character or so excerpt on my publishing at midnight and see if my emails go out. If they don’t then that means you guys have affected something in that area in this latest release on your end…

There shouldn’t be any issues with that, as a matter of fact, since we’ve seen some issues about excerpts in the emails being ignored when using More Tag (not emails that were not sent), our developers deployed a small fix for that.
Reach back in case the problem appears again after posting this night, we’ll have a closer look.

Ok. Reposted my blog tonight with a 55 character string in the excerpt. I did not see Any issue after that. My subscribers got the email it looks like. But interesting enough, I did some more digging last night and it appears a few on my jetpack email subscriber list got their email and most didn’t. Almost like there was a fail on your end or something in the midst of sending all the emails out? Maybe your server that handles this had a brief hiccup last night,

The emails are sent automatically to all your subscribers so it would be very odd that it was sent only to some. We could make sure that those emails were sent, but for that, we would need email addresses and it’s not a good idea to share them here, on the public forums.
In case this happens again, make sure the email didn’t end up in Spam/Junk folders and if it didn’t, reach back and we’ll have a closer look.

I am absolutely positive that only a handful of subscribers got the email that night. I have verified with a number of them who regularly get it and read my postings. And it did not go to spam folders or trash or anything weird like that. And comparing to my list of subscribers it appears as if a portion of the most recent subscribers is all who got it. But someone like my sister who is my original subscriber, never got it. And that is absolutely confirmed. But someone who subscribed a few months ago did get it. This was most definitely a Jetpack server hiccup somewhere. My guess, your server went down for a moment and didn’t generate all of the emails. Regardless, I posted again last night and made a long excerpt and from what I can tell it went out fine as I did check with one of my original subscribers and they got it. I wish there was a way you could check your server logs from 12:05 am that night to see if there was a hiccup that might have caused that.

I don’t see anything that went wrong specifically, personally though I recommend avoiding near-midnight posting. It’s a very popular time.

Shoot for off-times, like 12:43 am or 1:12 am. That will help you to avoid any “traffic,” which is generally not a problem, but I’m a “just in case” type of guy.

@macmanx Just curious, Just brainstorming here, what could have caused a portion of my subscribers to get theirs emails and a portion not to receive them? Because if there was an issue wouldn’t it have not sent out any emails at all? And don’t all emails generate from your sever and stored on your server?

Overall nothing seems to have gone out of place for your site at that time, so I am similarly brainstorming a theory about general traffic during that very popular time.

In order to look up what happened with specific emails, we would need to know two or three of the email addresses which failed.

Without breaking the privacy here, I’m sure you have access to my list of emails to my account. The one email that begins with “Carland” is one of those that didn’t go through.

    Plugin Contributor James Huff

    (@macmanx)

Assuming you mean carlandbeach, the logs on our end show the email was successfully sent.

    Thread Starter Andrew Arthur Dawson

    (@andrewarthurdawson)

@macmanx that is super strange as I have access to that email address as it’s my other half’s and I often use it for testing. In the life of me using Jetpack they have never not gotten the email when the post was made. But this person and a number of others on my list didn’t get it. So in light of your logs showing it went out, and assuming the logs probably would show the others went out, what could cause over half of my list to not get their emails when they all have different email providers?

    Plugin Contributor James Huff

    (@macmanx)

They were sent from us, so my own guess would be that the email provided blocked them for some reason. You’d have to check with the email provider on this though.

    Thread Starter Andrew Arthur Dawson

    (@andrewarthurdawson)

@macmanx Well that was initially my thought but when multiple providers didn’t accept the email that’s where it did not make sense. Since that happened that one night it hasn’t happened again which is why this is so strange because prior to it happening either all my emails went out Successfully or none of them. So I’m in a quandary as to why only some from multiple providers. And one of the other forum people above said someone else that night had issues too so I’m still inclined to believe it was a hiccup after your side was sending and before it actually left. Basically that the providers never got the email and the server stopped midstream on your end in a random hiccup.
