I have some sites with Updraft Plus Free running.

I recently changed the backup location from DropBox to GoogleDrive. The backups **appear** to be working correctly – I can see the backup files have been created.

Only issue is that all my sites hosted by HostGator have stopped sending me the email notification of a successful backup. Sites hosted elsewhere still send notification as expected. I have changed nothing else in the configuration and the notifications only stopped after changing to Google Drive.

The log file on one site shows:

0086.869 (0) Fetching RSS news feed
0087.810 (0) Fetched RSS news feed; result is a: SimplePie
0087.867 (0) Sending email (‘Files and database (Full backup)’) report (attachments: 0, size: 0 KB) to: admin…
0088.059 (0) The backup apparently succeeded and is now complete

    Any idea why?

    Hi,

The log message indicates that UpdraftPlus has passed on the email to be sent.

Please could you double check your spam/jumk folders?
If the emails are not there, please could you ask your hosts/server admin to check the outgoing mail-server logs? These should have a record of the emails and any errors that are occurring.

ok – I see an interesting notation in the log I posted:

0223.706 (0) Sending email (‘Files and database (Full backup)’) report (attachments: 0, size: 0 KB) to: admin…
0223.855 (0) The backup apparently succeeded and is now complete

It says SIZE: 0kb – is this why it’s not being sent?

    Actually HostGator say this:

Okay, the problem is that our outbound spam filter is catching these mails and flagging them as spam. UpdraftPlus is not authenticating the mails through SMTP so they are going out as unauthenticated PHP mails. That, plus the fact that the content has changed, has probably caused it to roll over our allowed detection value for “possibly spam-like content” and be caught. If you install “Easy WP SMTP” on your domain, and set up updraftplus to send out emails as an actual email user on your domain so the emails will be SMTP authenticated, it will likely go through.

If you would like to utilize an email service that is not subject to our outbound spam filtering, you could use Constant Contact, or Gmail for instance, which are not utilizing our mail servers and would not be subject to the regulations as such. Alternatively you could ask the Updraft support team if they can change the content of their messages to possibly remove any hyperlinks or domain names as those typically also trigger common spam filters.

    Hi,

    Thank you.

UpdraftPlus will send emails using whichever method is configured for WordPress.
Installing the Easy WP SMTP plugin should allow the backup emails to be sent, as HostGator say.

It’s ridiculous I should have to install a plugin to be able to send an email just because I changed the backup location. This is a joke!

    Hi,

Alternatively, you can ask HostGator to white-list the emails, so they are not sent to spam.

I’m afraid that the content of the report cannot be changed in the way HostGator suggests, as the links and domain names are required.

I did ask hostgator to do this and they refused point blank. Also asked them to escalate – they said they did escalate but I have heard nothing back.
