• I want people to be able to leave comments without the need for moderation. If I have the “Email me whenever anyone posts a comment” ONLY ticked I do not get notifications.

I have to have the box “Email me whenever a comment is held for MODERATION” ticked AS WELL to get notifications.

    Help would be much appreciated.

  • I’m wondering whether you have some conflicting settings at Settings > Discussion (https://WWW.YOUR-DOMAIN.COM/wp-admin/options-discussion.php). Could you post a screen shot? You can use https://snipboard.io to do this.

    Hi Helennatasha,

How wonderful that you should take an interest in my problem!
Above is a link to a screenshot of my Discussion page. I do hope you are able sort out my problem.

    Best,
    Lynete

Thanks, Lynete. I can’t see any problem there. Are you using a plugin to handle comments?

    Hi Helennatasha,

Thank you for your reply and, no, I’m not using a plugin to handle comments. I give below the list of plugins installed:

Akismet Anti-Spam (not sure if active)
    All in One SEO Pack
    Check Email
    GTranslate (not active)
    Limit Login Attempts Reloaded
    Polylang
    TinyMCE Advanced
    Titan Anti-Spam & Security
    UpdraftPlus-Backup/Restore (not active yet)
    WP Statistics

The ilyazilberberg-anthroposophyandlife.co.uk is for a friend. I experimented on one of my own WordPress websites by installing the WP Mail SMTP plugin but I had no luck with that either!

I’m afraid the next step in trying to resolve your problem is to deactivate all your plugins. …

    Hi Helennatasha,

Thank you very much for your suggestion. My friend, now 85, has just publicised his website to people all around the world. It is unthinkable that it should not work properly at this particular moment in time. However, I will deactivate all the plugins on my https://www.jkrishnamurti-sussex.info website, which I’m not really using at the moment, and see what results I get there.

    Let’s see!

    Hi Helennatasha,

I’m at a loss! I’ve just tested the Comment Notification function on my https://www.jkrishnamurti-sussex.info site while the plugins were still active, when the options “Email me when anyone posts a comment” and “Email me when a comment is held for moderation” were ticked.
Before, in the past, that was working. Now it is not!

Then I disabled all the plugins, but still got no notification with these two options ticked.

Then I activated the Check Email plugin and received an email successfully.
    I really don’t know what’s going on!

I’ve just noticed that when all the plugins were deactivated one test comment got published without being approved, even though that option was ticked. Perhaps because the anti-spam was deactivated.

When I further ticked “Before a comment appears Comment must be manually approved” the test comment wasn’t published, even though the plugins were deactivated.

It’s all sounding a bit buggy! Have you updated to the latest version of WordPress on both these sites?

    Thread Starter puzzled434

    (@puzzled434)

UPDATE on notifications. I’ve now received notifications on two comments, but after a long time lapse!

The first comment I made at 12.37 and received notification at 18.44 (UK time).
The second comment I made at 14.22 but as yet have not received notification.
The third comment I made at 15.58 and received notification until 17.50.

I do have the latest WordPress version on both sites, but my https://www.jkrishnamurti-sussex.info site is running on an outdated version of PHP (5.6.37) which I’m told requires update. However it doesn’t tell you how to update!

The ilyazilberberg-anthroposophyandlife.co.uk site has been newly created and the PHP version is not a problem.

I now have the Discussion option “Email me when anyone posts a comment” ticked (but not the options relating to moderation or manually approve) and have left a comment. No plugins are active. Let’s see if I get any notification, even if it takes until tomorrow.

    Hi Helennatasha,

I’ve now updated the PHP version on the jkrishnamurti-sussex.info site to 7.3. This Youtube video showed me how:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CNoDoHxyo8

I’ve just left another comment with “Email me when anyone posts a comment” ticked (and not the moderation or manually approve options ticked). There are no plugins active.

Let’s see if I get any notification this time!

    Hi Helennatasha,

I posted a comment at 08:37 this morning and still have had no notification. It’s now 20:54 UK time. No plugins were active and my PHP version was the latest.

It seems impossible to get notification when I just have “Email me when anyone posts a comment” ticked and not the moderation or manually approved options ticked as well.

I’ve checked my spam and no notification is there.

Thank you very much for your efforts – but please let me know if you have any further ideas.

    Best,
    Lynette
