Email fields losing validation type if set to required

If I set an email field to ‘required=yes’ and save. The validation changes to ‘None’ and can’t be changed (even if you set required back to ‘no’). This means you cannot refer to the email field in the confirmation message.

I can find no work around. It’s a show stopper.
