• No emails are being sent from my installation of WordPress 1.5 when new users try to register. When users forget their password and ask for it to be sent they see the following message on the screen.

The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function…

you can test this at https://blog.tersiocity.com

With this problem, no one can reigster or post to me blog, which make it useless. Please advise and tell me how to fix.

  • But it makes sense to send someone a email when they are registered by the admin, of course later they should be block-able.

Nah, I like Beel’s reasoning better. If they want to receive an email, they can register themselves.

Some of my users do not have e-mail and in other situations security is an issue so I want to tell them in person what their password is. Not very secure if I tell them and a password is sent anyway.

Can I moderate who joins and who doesnt?

Yes and no. Newly registered members are registeed with a user level of 0, which means that they can’t do anything to your blog other than comment if you have the “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” feature enabled. And, registered users can always be deleted.

Honestly, if you have already chosen who you want to register, just temporarily enable the “Anyone can register” feature for them, and then disable it as soon as their done.

But people who register automatically ave level 2 and can post whatever they like.

Hm, not on my blog. All of my registered users arrive with a user level of 0. What version of WordPress are you running?

Options|Writing|New Users May Publish Articles is probably checked.

thank you all very much, I know what I needed to know.
Thanks for being patient with me ??

About halfway through this thread somehow the topic was changed. It seems that there are inconsistent results with regards to new users receiving email notifications of their passwords.

I currently receive email as the admin for my users but they don’t get the email of their password. Oddly enough if I request a lost password it sends them an email to get their new password but not the new password email. I have attempted to look at all of the related suggestions on this page. No luck. Does anyone have any further suggestions?
