Elements of Site Not Saving – seems to be related to theme settings

  • We’ve had our site for close to 10 years so there is a lot of content tied to it. We started having some issues with the site on 3/11 at night. This was after the WP update to 5.9.2, which was automatically installed by Jetpack. Our site was built on Extra from Elegant Themes. We encountered an error that included this phrase: “Could not update the meta value of _et_pb_use_builder in database.” This seemed to be directly related to selecting sidebar and featured post options in the Extra Settings within the post. The posts (and pages) will save with the WordPress saving option, unless there is a theme setting selected.

    We reached out to Elegant Themes about this and they suggested it was an issue with our hosting provider. We reached out to our hosting provider and they said they didn’t see any error 500s at that current time or any logs for them. So we reached back to Elegant Themes and they escalated the issue to a higher tier.

    We had been having various issues with that theme for a while so we decided to change themes. We selected SmartMag which is built with Elementor. Upon trying to set it up, we ran into the exact same type of issues. When we tried to save a page with a template selected and then chose “Edit with Elementor” the theme said there was no default kit set.

    I wanted to provide those examples because we aren’t able to do anything with our typical posting schedule because we can’t select any theme settings.

    In addition to the ‘saving’ issue, we are having problems with the site working correctly with the theme in general. We just had our hosting provider restore our site from a backup (which should be the Extra theme) but on the backend we are still seeing Elementor/SmartMag as the active theme.

    We have tried all the typical steps such as clearing the cache (both on browser and server), reinstalling WordPress, deactivating all the plugins, and even trying the default WP theme. The issues are always there.

    Our server has been upgraded to PHP 8. Help, suggestions, guidance would be appreciated.

    Looking at your site, you are an Elementor Pro v3.6.3 user. The developer can’t have a conversation with customers here. That’s not permitted for anyone.

    As the developer is aware, commercial products are not supported in these forums. I am sure they will have no problem supporting you there.
