• Fomrtatting and typing Efficiency nightmare. Not felxible at all in terms of presets. Basic things like shortcuts for headings do not work.
Bloat in code is easily created and cannot be removed, no way to edit the pure html code with css classes, especially frustrating with sidebars/widgets creation. DOMassacre.

The worst WP builder on the market.

  • Hi @wordpresslover7,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Gutenberg plugin!

Basic things like shortcuts for headings do not work.

You should be able to use a / to activate the search through blocks. Was this feature not working for you, or were you using a different shortcut system?

no way to edit the pure html code with css classes, especially frustrating with sidebars/widgets creation

Folks can apply CSS classes to blocks in the right-side toolbar after clicking on the block. You should also be able to toggle to the HTML mode of the block by clicking on the three vertical dots that appear when you select the block.

Was this way of editing the HTML and CSS not intuitive for your use case?

    Warmly,
    Destiny

The CSS editing is totally not intuitive. There’s all these extra “” and {} all over the place! With original WordPress I learned so much CSS and HTML and PHP. I, an English major and writer, learned to code my own webpages just by messing with WordPress

Now I have to learn this weird WordPress language that has no other applications!

If you start to type in HTML or CSS into code editors, then want to switch to a new tab to check your syntax or double check a color or for any reason at all (once I got a new email and wanted to see if it was my COVID test results), it assumes you’re done. So if anything is left undone, it says there are errors, forces you to use the automatic fix-it process and if that screws up, then it’s just like “SOrry this is HTML now”

At least give people a chance to move away from the window.

And there are so few customizing options that you have to go into CSS to make it look how you want.

Not a single person has ever said what problem Gutenberg is supposed to solve? What was wrong with before when people learned stuff and could make their pages look the way they wanted with little effort?

@piyopiyofox for exmaple SHIFT alt 3 – adding heading. Usually peaople paste text from WORD file and then improve it, format the text in WordPress. in gutenberpg proofreading, adding comments etc it would takes ages. Imagine you add 6 headings per article, 50 articles a month, With gutenberg you need to generate 4 clikcs to format text into heading no. 3, so in my case I need 1200 clicks to add just stupid headings! This is only one of efficiency nightmares of Gutenberg. classic editor had that shortcuts working.guteberg has no option to define own shortcuts.

    Another exmaple?
permalink – in classic editor is is available out of the box under title, added after saving a draft, with Gutenberg is nested somwhere deep, and visible only after the post/page is published.

    Even more examples?
@walton gave you a tip. Blocks add some WordPress codes that have nothing to do with css, html or php. Look at Oxygen builidier plugin and compare it with Gutenberg. Gutenberg is made for beginners, hobby writers who want to pubilsih a a simple text online once a month, not made for anything professional ot at least a bit professional.

    Hi @walton ,

Thanks for joining the conversation and sharing your feedback.

That doesn’t sound right at all. On what type of page are you seeing extra syntax symbols?

If you’re talking about Gutenberg’s “HTML”, I think this post gives a great overview about why it is different from the typical HTML we are used to — https://fluffyandflakey.blog/2017/09/04/gutenberg-posts-arent-html/

So if anything is left undone, it says there are errors, forces you to use the automatic fix-it process and if that screws up, then it’s just like “SOrry this is HTML now”

I can see how this can be a frustrating experience if you went from the visual mode to an HTML mode to edit. I’m hearing that you’d like to work in HTML– have you tried using the HTML block for your needs from the start?

And there are so few customizing options that you have to go into CSS to make it look how you want.

I’d love to know what are some of the CSS customization options you’d like to see added to the block editor are if you don’t mind sharing.

    Thanks for getting back @wordpresslover7,

Usually peaople paste text from WORD file and then improve it, format the text in WordPress. in gutenberpg proofreading, adding comments etc it would takes ages.

Multiple clicks does sound really frustrating. From my use, I have been able to copy and paste text and keep the formatting. Are you saying that your fomratting does not hold when you move it over from your word processor? If so, which one do you use? It may be worth filing a ticket here https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues so that folks can consider supporting a copy-paste transfer.

I’d also recommend using /h2 or /h3 to quickly get to your heading blocks.

permalink – in classic editor is is available out of the box under title, added after saving a draft, with Gutenberg is nested somwhere deep, and visible only after the post/page is published.

We do have a few issues open regarding the permalink and it’s placement that you may want to follow https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/30579 https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/24915

These are all great feedback points, and I think the more we can add these concerns as issues, the better Gutenberg will shape up for professionals. ??

/h2 /h3 is not applicable to a selected text.

    1. sample text 2. you select that sample text 3. keyboard shortcut does not work

You can find that shortcuts in an official wordpreess manual – Some do not work in Gutenberg like headings.

    Keyboard Shortcuts

Are you saying that your fomratting does not hold when you move it over from your word processor?

Yes, I am. WP sometimes adds extra blank lines, headings are usually well copied but sometimes more text is marked as heading tag after copying.

I used to format each text in a classic editor, TINY MCE was also helpful with working keyboard shortcuts. Not all copywriter remeber to add right headings in exteranal word processors

    Hi @wordpresslover7

This definitely sounds like a bug, and I see that you have reported it here https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/37796 thank you so much for your contribution. I understand it’s a pain to workaround for the moment, but now that this is on the team’s radar we are one step closer to getting this improved.

Ahh, I see. May I ask which word processor you are using? There has been writing about how Gutenberg pulls in different pasted content in the past like here https://wpbuildingblocks.com/paste-content-into-gutenberg/ but this is something that will probably need to be iterated on further. Alternatively, drafting content directly in the editor can alleviate this pain point in the meantime as well ??

    @piyopiyofox

the bug was also reported in 2018… today is 2022, still not solved out.

    https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/11173

I use just MS Word or sometimes google docs.

Gutenberg is free, that’s why nobody cares about such “insignificant” issues. 3645 opened tickets right now. Not enough skilled enthusiasts who could fix at least half of them.
