I recently upgraded to 3.0.1, and now I can’t post anything. When I start a post in Visual mode, it shows me what I think is the HTML toolbar (I’m not sure because I rarely use HTML mode). For example, there is no button for adding a link to text.

When I click on the HTML tab, basic HTML tags appear in what I have written, but the toolbar doesn’t change. When I switch back to Visual mode, the toolbar disappears altogether, while the HTML tags still appear in what I have written.

The only thing that doesn’t disappear is the Upload/Insert mini-toolbar. But when I click the “Add an Image” button, instead of offering to search for my upload, I get a warning that I am about to navigate away from the page and lose any unsaved work.

Disabling plug-ins doesn’t seem to help. Should I reinstall 3.0.1? How would I even do that?

First, go to Users/Your Profile in the admin panel, check “Disable the visual editor when writing” and click “Update Profile.” Then, go back to Users/Your Profile, uncheck “Disable the visual editor when writing” and click “Update Profile.”

If that doesn’t work, try downloading WordPress again and delete then replace your copies of everything except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download.

Thanks for the quick response. The easy way didn’t help, I’ll try redownloading and installing tomorrow.

James, thanks for your help. Reinstalling WordPress did the trick, although there was another problem that I described here.

My geeky wife dug around and discovered some new code referring to PHP5 that was needed in the .htaccess file, as described here. In the process we discovered that the .htaccess file was missing altogether — your instructions above didn’t state that it should be retained, so I deleted everything except wp-config.php and /wp-content/. I guess if I had just uploaded the new files and overwritten the old ones, .htaccess would have remained untouched, but I deleted rather than overwriting.

    But again, thanks.
