For the last three years, I have been able to go to Appearance-Editor-then footer page to add code for my copyright, privacy and terms of use for the footer. All I have had to do is paste the code and update file. It worked great.

I updated to 4.9 today. I went to my theme footer page (I use WordPress theme 2012) and pasted code and hit update file. After a long wait, I got this message:

“Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.”

I called BlueHost. They offered no help.

Before 4.9, I had an easy solution; Now I have a hard problem. What do I do to put my code in my footer? I also have Pinterest code and Twitter code that I have put on other pages the same way. I understand there is a CSS editor, but I don’t know how to make the code go to the correct page that way.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Several people have reported this; we’re looking for something in common. Can you check to see if bluehost is using mod_secure?

Thank you for your suggestion. I will ask them. If they say that they do, what then do I ask them to do or tell me to do?

I came back to edit my support post because I realized that I have some very important code that I have to add back to my website: code for Site Lock. It protects my site, so I need this problem solved. (I pay for this protection, too!)

BlueHost said I use a shared server, and they don’t use mod_secure on a shared server.

SiteLock added my trust seal back to my website because I am a paid customer.

How do I add my privacy, terms of use and copyright notices if I can’t use the WordPress editor? They are supposed to be on my website, and I can’t add them. BlueHost wouldn’t help.

    Please help.

    With gratitude,

    Sharen McArthur

While this is being investigated, use FTP to download the file you want to edit (probably footer.php), edit on your PC, and upload.

Please clarify: Do I download my footer.php file, insert my code and upload the file?

    exactly

Thank you for your response. I called BlueHost. They helped me to load FileZilla. Then they wouldn’t help me anymore. They said I had to hire a web developer. That is out of my budget, so I hope someone can fix this editor problem sooner than soon.

    With gratitude for your help,

    Sharen McArthur

Any idea of when WP will release a fix for this? It happens on most of my sites and is very frustrating.

Seems to be plugin related for me, not checked all my sites but one plugin I use a lot which leaves me unable to edit PHP files is the WPMU DEV Custom Sidebars plugin

    – which is a shame, as I use it in a lot of my sites

Update – have replaced Custom Sidebars with Proteus Custom Sidebars (essentially the same plugin, taken over by another outfit) and the problem is gone

I don’t have either of these plugins. Still can’t add code to the editor.

Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.

Since I upgrade my WordPress to 4.9, and now to 4.9.1 yet, when ever I want to edit my themes, after editing when I click save this the reply I get

Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.
Please can somebody help me resolved this issue? Pleas I need help

Same issue, PLUGINS were the culprit. Deactivate & go through each one and find the one that needs to get kicked out.
