Editor Formatting Menu

It sounds like what you’re seeing is part of the full-height editor in WordPress. You can disable that feature by heading over to WP > Posts then go to edit any post, then you click on the Screen options tab (on the upper right corner of the window), then you uncheck the box next to where it says “Enable full-height editor and distraction-free functionality.”
