• So I am not able to get the visual editor or the text editor to function in the WordPress install on my server. I cannot edit content that was ported over and I cannot add new content other than creating the page itself. Before I am referred to one of the many links on this subject, I have done the following:

    1. Disabled all plug-ins: I renamed the plugins file plugins.hold. The text editor appears ONCE with content on only one post. If you click to Visual Editor, everything “disappears” If you go back to “text” and hit CTRL-A and refresh the browser, the content shows up again in the Text editor. BUT, as soon as you click Visual, it’s gone again.
    2. I have added define(‘SCRIPT_DEBUG’,true); to my config file.
    3. I put my fist in the screen
    4. I reinstalled WP 3.9
    5. I made sure the visual editor is enabled for my profile
    6. I have tried firefox, Safari and Chrome – same problem.

Any other thoughts on where to look next? This editor issue started with the upgrade to 3.9. Is there a way to revert to an old version of WP without a full install?

  • Have you tried:

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

I changed the plugins folder name to plugin.hold and all plugins were deactivated (allegedly).

I can try the default theme but this site has been around for a while with the current theme – that does not mean the theme is current for WP though.

Last resort will be to load everything again.

I looked in Firebug and appears there is a JS error with TinyMCE:

Uncaught Type Error: Undefined is not a Function
    Ver 4021-20140412:0

I wonder if I replace the js file if that will work? The Visual Editor displays no buttons and I wonder if that is killing the editor itself?

Please try switching to the default 2014 theme.

Yes – switching to the 2014 theme re-enabled the VE. What next?

Looks like you have a bad theme. Where did you download it from?

It’s Mandrake – I downloaded the theme about a year or so ago +/- the theme was functioning fine 10 days ago.

Where did you download it from?

mojo-themes… out of curiosity, why would the theme be the problem? The theme does not control the Admin screen does it? The site looks fine….

why would the theme be the problem

It is probably interfering with core jQuery.

The theme does not control the Admin screen does it?

Oh – if only! I can bring the entire admin side of a site to a shuddering halt using just a theme. I’m sorry but as you appear to be using a non-WPORG theme, you need to raise this issue with the theme’s developers – paid or otherwise. We only support themes downloaded from www.remarpro.com here.

Okay – I will take a look. Is there a way to uninstall WP 3.9 and move back one evolution until I can get a theme patch?

That would be a really bad idea as it would mean that your site would be running a very real risk of being hacked. See https://blog.sucuri.net/2012/03/wordpress-understanding-its-true-vulnerability.html

Clearing up after a hack would take a lot longer (and be potentially a lot more expensive) than switching to another theme for a while.

Hmmm… I’ll have to see if a current theme can fit my needs.. ugh…

BTW – it’s really bad juju to hack a site for a church! ??
