Disabled all plugins, went to default theme, cleared my cache, tried a different browser, tried downgrading to 4.0.1, then re-upgraded to 4.2.2 — none of these solved my weird editor problem.

The ‘visual’ and ‘text’ tabs do not appear as tabs anymore; instead they are buttons. And the editor looks like it is in some never-before-seen two-column mode with the left column in text mode and the right column empty. Pressing the ‘visual’ button does nothing.

Using Thesis theme 1.8.3 but using the default WP theme does not help this.

    Here’s what it looks like:

This is driving me crazy and I am working against a deadline.

    Any ideas? Thanks!!

Okay, I discovered the problem — though I don’t understand it. The site owner had put a custom .htaccess file up which contained some supposed security enhancements. When I reverted to a standard .htaccess file, the editor worked again. I don’t know why that file suddenly started causing the problem, though, since it’s been in use for over a year without issues. Perhaps the hosting provider made a server change that made it misbehave. Mysterious.
