Any ideas why when I upload a normal html page to my server it displays a WordPress error 404?

If your WP is installed in the base-directory all external accesses will be send to WP (using permalink).

The original url will be rewritten via htaccess-directives.

So you don’t get your uploaded file – you get a 404-WP-Error

perhaps the issue is with index.html vs the index.php file. tricknick didn’t mention the name of the page uploaded.
