Editing the Themes of Individual Sites in a Network

  • Hi,

    Thanks again for the help on getting the network working! However, now that I have it up, I was wondering how I could edit individual themes on different networked sites.

    I applied the wsc 6 theme for the main blog and the network: https://www.microinvestmentinitiative.org and figured out how to change the header image, but when I try to edit the theme for the subblog https://www.microinvestmentinitiative.org/stanford by changing the picture in the theme code, the header changes for everything including the main blog. Is there a way to use a plugin for custom CSS to fix this or something like that?

    Also, themes that have options instead of making you edit theme files, will be on a per blog basis.

    Thanks for the quick reply! I tried the plugin, but it seems to only allow me to edit css per a blog? That won’t let me change the image in the header or perhaps I’m just missing this as a novice? Also, I think wsc 6 allows for editing outside the files (through the dashboard) but it seems to edit all the files instead of just one blog in the network at a time?

    Again, if you are editing theme FILES, then yes you are editing the theme for every single blog using that theme. Themes are shared.

    You asked for a custom css plugin to edit changes on a per blog basis. I gave you one.

    Look at your theme. If the header is done via css, then change it with the css plugin on each blog. If it is a hardcoded img reference int he theme… find a better theme. Even more better woudl be a theme that uses the custom header option.

    (and YES your theme uses a hardcoded link to a specific image. that is not going to work)

    Ah, okay I got it, also just figured out how to search for the themes by that property on the dashboard. Thanks for the help!

    This is my work around (is there a problem with doing it this way?):

    I downloaded the individual theme I wanted and then uploaded it to (Themes) on the main site (through FTP), bypassing the automatic theme install on the wp dashboard.

    To add the same theme (with independently editable CSS) to individual sites I renamed the theme folder and uploaded it again.

    Now when i go to “Themes” I have what looks like the same theme multiple times but if you look at where the files for that theme are stored (bottom right of theme scrnshot), you can see that they are in different folders, leaving it up to you to then go and activate the correct theme for your individual site.

    Is this an appropriate solution?

    also rename the theme name in style.css.

    If you *just* want to edit the css… use a plugin.
