Editing the Dashboard

Id really like to be able to edit the dashboard, preferably with a plugin rather than a hack as i know what a pain updating WP can be if youve edited the admin section.

Ive found

but its not compatible with 2.7

Is there anything similar out there which i could use?

The brief outline of what i want to do is have users register on my site and all become contributors but i dont want them to see the dashboard, tools and various other things.
