Editing Post page

hi all,

this is my very first post on wordpress and its as simple as wordpress’s usage ??

Well i want to represent the number of DIGGs per post and i want it to display when the user reads the whole post after clicking on the permanent link, so i tried to edit the index.php page of the current theme, but no luck, i guess i dont know what do edit.. Please let me know how can i do that..
