Editing php Files

Very new to wordpress and realize this should probably be in a different place. But I was wondering if there is anyway to directly edit the php files for the suits theme. I am trying to import the files in Netbeans, but every time i try to import the php files do not show up in the folder. I don’t know what is wrong. Is this what is meant by permissions? Is this able to be done with any wordpress theme? Is there an outlet that could explain any of this stuff? Thanks
