• An intern created a site for us and we are now trying to figure out what was done. I am able to navigate to the “un-named” home page of our web site via the Pages nav. but do not see anything in the editor (Visual tab) – even when clicking the “HTML” tab…

So, how is the Home page be edited? Clicking the “View Page” button does in fact display the home page in a new window, so I know I am looking at the correct page…

    Please enlighten me. Thanks,

    Michael Suder

  • I hate it when that happens.

The first thing you need to do is go Settings -> Reading and see what “Front page displays” is set to.

If it is indeed set to the the page you are looking at in Pages (un-named?), then go Pages -> All Pages and click the Edit link for the specified page.

In the right-hand column, look to see what is set for the Template entry in Page Attributes.

If it is set to “Default Template” then the intern probably hard-coded the content you’re seeing in wp-content/themes/your_template_name/index.php. If it is set to some other template, you’ll need to track that file down and look there.

If “Front page displays” is set to some other page, it will similarly lead you to the page you need to look at.

Another possibility is that the intern installed a custom theme which somehow over-rides the typical settings for WordPress, so it would be a good idea if the above doesn’t work to check the name of the theme you’re using by going Appearance -> Themes and see what is listed at the top as the “current theme.”

Let us know what you find. This kind of hunt is always interesting.
