The goal? Get a blog that looks like the rest of my page. You can get a sense of the layout I’m going for here: https://www.alm129.com

I needed a 1-column theme. I chose Here I Am which can be found here: https://eruanna.net/2006/10/12/here-i-am/

My failure at adjusting the theme as needed has resulted in https://www.alm129.com/blog

Notable issues: Why can’t I get a background to display in the header or the sidebar? I read a tutorial on the codex, and it didn’t seem to be any more complex than changing the background in the body, which I did successfully.

Why does the blog drastically different in Internet Explorer than in Firefox (test it out.) In IE it seems that I got margins to work and successfully centered the content which doesn’t seem to happen in Firefox (although the rest of its appearance in IE is way more bizarre, like the background that should have applied to the header now being the background for the whole page.)

  • I’m still learning how to ajust themes to fit my website. So I am limited to what I have learned so far. I think what you need to do is put your background image you use for your existing pages into the ‘body’ section of your theme’s CSS only and make sure all the other div classes/id backgrounds are set to transparent. So that whatever sits on top of your page will show the page background. You have to think of it like layers of clear plastic film, each layer represents a section of your whole page, ie sidebar; footer, content etc.,

I hope this helps…it’s perhaps more complex to explain than do.

As for differing views in various browsers…well that’s an ongoing issue. It’s all to do with Web Standards. You may find this article helpful with regards CSS.

and some more interesting stuff here especially with regards Web Standards…

So did you solve this problem or not?

    Obviously not!

When you’re talking about modding a theme it can be quite complex. I would personally be using Sandbox as I find it to be the easiest single column theme to mod. You may find that it fits your needs better…then again, I may be wrong.

My point is that practically speaking there’s little anyone can do to help you save doing it themselves.

Thanks. I’ll see what progress I can make with the Sandbox theme.
