Hi I’m helping a friend out with her website (i.e. I’m not an expert!).

She’s using NextGen and I’m not familiar with it. She has 2.1.15 installed.

    It says server settings are:
Operating System : Linux (32 Bit)
    Server : Apache
    Memory usage : 21.11 MByte
    MYSQL Version : 5.1.73-log
    SQL Mode : Not set
    PHP Version : 5.5.28
    PHP Safe Mode : Off
PHP Allow URL fopen : On
    PHP Memory Limit : 268435456
PHP Max Upload Size : 2M
PHP Max Post Size : 8M
    PCRE Backtracking Limit : 1000000
PHP Max Script Execute Time : 30s
    PHP Exif support : Yes ( V1.4 )
    PHP IPTC support : Yes
    PHP XML support : Yes

    Graphic Library

GD Version : bundled (2.1.0 compatible)
    FreeType Support : Yes
    FreeType Linkage : with freetype
    T1Lib Support : No
    GIF Read Support : Yes
    GIF Create Support : Yes
    JPEG Support : Yes
    PNG Support : Yes
    WBMP Support : Yes
    XPM Support : No
    XBM Support : Yes
JIS-mapped Japanese Font Support : No

(Host is 1&1 in case they have known issues on this.)

In her galleries some of the thumbnails need editing. Go to edit thumbnail and you get up a blank rectangle. That’s all it does.

Searching I’ve found things like memory limits being a cause. Most hits are many years old. I’ve seen “fixes” explained but they are for versions of the software that when I look in the subdirectories either the files or the subdirectories themselves don’t exist in these versions.

I have tried disabling all plugins save for NextGen.
I have tried changing the theme to 2015.
I have tried uploading a small single file into a gallery of its own (and it doesn’t have any special characters in the file name).
Whatever I do I still see a blank box rather than something that might edit a thumbnail.

I’m beyond what I can understand with it and need some suggestions, please.

    Thanks.

@elduck – Thanks for all of the details … one of the commonest issues with the site’s web host is with the WordPress Permalinks being set to the “Default”, if that is the case try using something like “Post name” or “Month and name” as better alternatives.

If you change the Permalinks you will also likely need to clear the image cache under Gallery > Other Options > Miscellaneous as well.

    See if that helps.

    Thanks!

    Cais, thanks for the suggestions.

I’m not sure why permalinks would matter but I went to check anyway.

Permalinks were set to a custom value which was equal to post name!
    /%postname%/
I’ve changed it to post name properly and cleared the cache too.

    That made no difference.

@elduck – Please send us a Bug Report (https://nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/ … please reference this topic) so we can get a better look under the page at your site.

We may need temporary log in (and FTP) credentials for your WordPress installation, please consider those for your Bug Report, too.

    Thanks!

    Hi @photocrati,

Cais, this issue is still hitting my friend’s site. She has upgraded her account temporarily to an even more “unlimited” one than her previous “unlimited” one.

I’ve just tried again, setting the theme to 2016 deactivating all plugins other than the NextGen and still the Edit Thumbnails pops up a blank screen. I tried it on both Firefox and Chrome in case it made a difference.

I also tried installing Imsanity and resizing images in case it was an issue with images being too big (I know there are some large JPG files in her uploads but Imsanity did quite a bit of resizing).

What can we do now? Any ideas, please?

@elduck – I would recommend responding to the Bug Report you sent originally so we can continue the conversation we started there rather than splintering it across multiple places.

    Thanks!

    – Cais.
