WordPress 4.8. What happened to the edit page / view page links in the Admin Bar that allowed a logged-in Admin or Editor to edit and view a page, Woocommerce Product, Post, etc. when the published item is displayed in the web browser?
Now I have to dive into the Dashboard and access the item through the Page, Product, etc. menus.

Is there a way to restore this critical functionality to the Admin Bar in WP 4.8?

  • The Edit Post/Page link is still there for me across a number of WP 4.8 sites. Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    Hello TheSailingChannel,
Make sure your plugins/themes are updated and compatible with 4.8. Try testing with a default theme such as twenty seventeen, or disabling your plugins to rule them out.
    Cheers,
    John-Paul

In 4.8, where do you see the edit and view links on the Admin Bar? Here’s an image of mine sans edit or view links.

SOLVED! The culprit was Jetpack. Somehow, in Jetpack settings, Enable The WordPress.com Toolbar got selected.

    WordPress.com toolbar

    Enable the WordPress.com toolbar
The WordPress.com toolbar replaces the default admin bar and offers quick links to the Reader, all your sites, your WordPress.com profile, and notifications. Centralize your WordPress experience with a single global toolbar.

ABOVE IS TRUE BUT.. it removes the edit page / view page links as well as the dropdown under the site url for quick access to the Dashboard, Themes, Widgets, and Menus of the current site.

I identified the problem because I finally recognized the new drop down side menu was coming from Jetpack. When I clicked on Settings, I saw that WordPress.com toolbar was enabled. To disable it, I had to return to the WP Dashboard then click on the Jetpack settings. I now have the standard Admin Bar back…

I have the same issue but I do not have Jetpack installed. I’ve disabled all plugins and still do not have the ability to edit or create a new post from anywhere on the admin bar.

This is referring to the Admin toolbar on the left side of the wp-admin page AND the WordPress Top Menu bar as well.

When I hover over the “Post” link in the left-hand menu, the link there has been changed to “https://www.stevensheeley.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category”
and the only submenu choices I get are “Categories”, “Edit Tags” and “Manage Series”

I got the same issue after updating to wordpress 4.9 today. I updated some plugins at the same time, but disabling them didn’t change anything. (And I don’t have Jetpack)

I’ve also ruled out my theme – however the last two solutions look risky and not easy so I didn’t try them.

Isn’t there some way to add a trace and see what disable the menu item ?

Disable this setting. All done. https://prntscr.com/iavxwk

Ran into this today and here’s what fixed it:

    1. Deactivate WooCommerce from the Plugins page.
    2. Activate WooCommerce!

    That was it! ??
