    Hi,
thank you for this plugin, I really like it so far and find it easy to use.

I migrated from Yoast, and moved my settings across as per the instructions provided.

What I have noticed though is that I can’t edit the Custom Product Descriptions, once I click into them they become blurred, and anything I type overwrites the current text.

I only have small changes to make, so it would be great if I didn’t have to type the majority of it out again. I can’t copy the text either.

Editing the Custom Product Title text works perfectly.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

    Philip.

  • Hey Philip, welcome aboard! I’m glad to hear migration went smoothly. Would you please provide a bit more info?

You are taking about WooCommerce, right? Thanks!

    Hi, thanks.

Yes, sorry, in WooCommerce products, correct.

    Thank you.

    Hi @hcvni,

The blurring is intentional and it’s actually a feature.
What’s blurred is the placeholder, and that’s not copied from anywhere.
It means you’re overwriting the automatically generated description.

I understand that on some monitors, at some angles, and for some eyes that the difference between a placeholder and-input text can’t be told apart. I can’t accommodate for this any further than adding the blurry effect.

We’ve speculated about allowing editing of the auto-generated description, but we came to the conclusion that it would be a UX nightmare for a multitude of reasons. One of which is that it’s not how any browser reacts, another is that it’s obtrusive for most users.

If it’s still unclear, or if you have any other questions, let us know!
For now, I’m marking this thread as resolved.

    Cheers ??

    Hi Sybre,
thank you for the detailed explanation, but… oh dear, I don’t think I have explained this to you very well at all.

The text that is blurred is not automatically generated, it is the text that I wrote myself (I referred to it as “the current text” in my original question) when using Yoast, and that your plugin is now telling me is too long. I just want to truncate it (Yoast never told me it was too long), but without having to write it all out again. It is not blurred until I click on it.

I hope that is a better description?

    Thanks,
    Philip.

    Hi @hcvni,

The blurring only happens on placeholders of focussed input fields.
A placeholder is overwritten when you start typing… and when you remove your custom text, the (blurred) placeholder is back again.

If the placeholder resembles something that’s somehow copied from existing data, then I’m quite flabbergasted as to how this occurred and where this data is fetched from. My speculation is that what you’re referring to is placed as an excerpt, instead of a custom (SEO) field.

Aside from that, I recommend waiting for TSF 3.0 to get a better analogy regarding title and description lengths; e.g. it being too long.
For more information, see my comment here. In short, we’re (slowly) moving towards pixel calculations, rather than character calculations.

    Hi again,
OK, thanks for all your help.
I will leave it as is for now, and look at it again when 3.0 comes out. I don’t think it’s doing any harm anyway.
    Best regards,
    Philip.

    Hi again,
just to let you know, it is happening with the WooCommerce products Custom Product Title too now, previously I could have edited it.

It’s not a problem, I can copy and paste the title in again and then edit it, but that can’t be the way it was designed I’m sure.

I upgraded to WP 4.8.3 (from 4.8.2) this morning, apart from that I can’t think of anything else that changed with my set up.

    Many thanks.

    Hi @hcvni,

I understand what you’re experiencing is inconvenient, and I’m sorry about that!
But, I’m now quite lost in what the issue truly is ?? Luckily, a picture tells a thousand words.

Could you send a few screenshots, explaining what’s happening, and maybe one showing what you expected?
You can do so confidentially on my contact page.

    Cheers!

    Hi,
no need to apologise, I’m not complaining, just letting you know.

As I updated more products, it seems it happens to some of them and not others, with no obvious reason why there’s a distinction.

I will of course send some screen shots through.

    Cheers.

    Hi again,
did you ever get that email? I sent it at the time above, but I also changed hosts that same week, and some of my incoming email never made to me during the switch over. Sorry if I missed your reply.

It doesn’t matter now anyway, I am all caught up with the editing, I just didn’t want to leave this hanging.

    Cheers,
    Philip.
