• OK I am in a dilemma here. I set up wordpress on my domain (hosted by GoDaddy) to act as my website software. Our needs are relatively simple so the WordPress software seemed a perfect fit.

Long story short, my wife and I run a busy Adult Foster Care home and we do not often need to update the site as the data remains relevent for months at a time.

A few days ago ago I needed to edit a couple of existing posts and add/publish a new one. However, no matter what PC I attempt to edit my wordpress posts with (I have tried seven different PC’s on three different network connections so far) I cannot for the life of me get the software to let me edit a post. I can log in to my dashboard without a problem, navigate around and even make key settings changes BUT, the second I try to edit a page/post or publish a new blog post, nothing happens.. it just hangs there.. forever.

After 3 days of trying endlessly, I finally managed to get one post to publish by walking away from my machine for over an hour. When I returned, the screen was blank but after checking the homepage the post had been published. However, I made a small error and needed to edit it and nothing gives.

Can anyone please tell me what is going on? I simply do not have the time to figure this out between taking care of residents and catching up on sleep. Several months ago when I made the last edits the site was as slick and fast as it was when I first installed it. Nothing has been done to the site since then until now and for whatever reason, I cannot edit. Its extremely frustrating and I am at my wits end.

    Any and all suggestions welcome.

    Oh and its WordPress v2.1

I was loathe to upgrade because a) I don’t really know how and b) I was afraid upgrading would mean losing all my posts and starting from scratch, which I simply cannot afford to do right now.

youre running a VERY old version of wordpress. I wouldnt be surprised if your site were not hacked in some way. I dont see any outright evidence of it on your site, but that doesnt mean a whole lot —

I upgraded a 2.1 blog a while back that had admin pages that had been exploited, and you could actually “see” the malicious pages being loaded in the bottom toolbar.

you edited your post answering the question he asked.

    moving on ..

you need to upgrade that site. the very real possibility exists that its already been compromised.

Oh I see what you’re saying. I was editing my post before I saw his reply actually.. not the other way around.

So, are there any simple checks that can be made to see if my site has been ‘exploited’?

I don’t believe it has been but then I am not the expert here. I certainly see no signs of malicious pages/urls appearing in my bottom toolbar of the browser when executing activities in the dashboard.

    1. yes. using an ftp client, look at the timestamps on the files inside wp-admin/ are any of them more recent that others? any that look unusual?

files that are physically altered will have changed timestamps. yours, even if not all the same, should all be old.

    2. another good indicator is to look in your database (inside the users table) for a user named wordpress

There are SO many different hacks for that version of wordpress…

Your admin password is retrievable with a simple copy and paste.

The newest timestamp of any file in my wp-admin/ folder is Jan 24th 2007. So about a year ago. Its the upgrade-functions.php file and the wp-admin.css file.

I’m sensing I’m screwed from what you’re telling me. I have no idea how to proceed to be honest.
