This morning, I was on my main admin screen edit-comments.php to approve a few comments. I click “Approve” on one and it worked. I clicked “Approve” on another and the whole comment box turned red and stayed red. I thought that odd. Then, I clicked the Comments link in the admin left toolbar to reload my comments admin page. That’s when I got the 404 error.

I searched around and the best I could find was people suggesting a string of characters in the comment set off the problem, or that it was a permalinks issue. I re-selected my permalinks with no change. Then I started looking at the latest comments.

I added the comment-status parameter to the edit-comments.php page and I looked at trash, spam, approved, pending, and all. Doing so, I deleted all of my spam comments and trash comments. This left it to about 2 or 3 recent comments.

When I used the comment-status parameter “all,” I was surprised to see all of the comments. However, if I leave off that parm, like i’m using the WP admin link, I still get the 404 error. And yes, I did clear my cache.

    I’m stumped.

P.S. I have not updated any plug-ins recently.

    two things:
    1. Clearing out the spam seemed to do the trick.
    2. The persisting “not found” issue after the spam deletion is due to a browser caching issue.
