• I’m new to wordpress. I have been using geeklog, and want to see if wordpress has better features, or ease of use.

I have installed wordpress, very easy.
I have entered my first blog, very easy
I changed the theme, very easy.

Now, I want to ad adsense, adsense search, technorati tags, statscounter, etc.

It seems like I have to modify the index.php file or the template coding.

With geeklog, I just define a block, stick the adsense code in the block, move it right or left, enable it or disable it, all without touching any php coding.

So I am wondering: Why are there so many people using wordpress? the customization is not very flexible!

  • flexible can be defined in many ways. WP is quite flexible, it simply requires some XHTML, PHP, and CSS to accomplish the tasks. Some more advanced than others, depending on how far away from a theme you deviate.
You may want to look into a theme that has been updated to use widgets. This allows for easy customization of the sidebar in a similar fashion you describe.
Likewise, with litereally hundreds of themes, there may be one designed that has the features you are looking for.

Well with WP you just open up the theme editor – click on sidebar (or wherever) and stick your adsense code where you want it to appear. Maybe 2 minutes?

As for the tags and stats. There are many, many plugins that are available that are simple to install.
Simple Tags and CG-Referrer come to mind. A google search for plugins for WordPress will return a wealth of info.

Thanks all for your responses, will take a look at themes with widgets. The theme I use (connections) does not use widgets. Too bad it’s a theme-dependent thing.

I found a couple of plug-ins for stats and tags, there seems to be a plug-in for everything, which is a good thing, but at the same time it’s also a bad thing, would have been easier to have these in the base functionalities.

samboll, I agree it’s easy enough to insert the adsense code. But tomorrow, if I want to change adsense from the tower on the right to in-line in the middle, I have to move the code, as opposed to click on an option, and leave the codes alone. It just does not seem very elegant to me.

I like a few other aspects of wordpress, however, and will spend a little more time on it.
