E-Commerce Plugin for Donations

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to help out a charity who is starting up a program to allow folks to sponsor children in 3rd world country.

They currently have a WordPress site. I want to create a page, where people can view children who need to be sponsored, and then can provide a donation to sponsor a specific child.

It seems to me that this is essentially the same as to an e-commerce site, and the best bet is to use an e-commerce plugin to provide this functionality.

However, I would need to be able to change the basic “language” from that used by e-commerce (buy, checkout, pay,etc) to that of a charity (sponsor, donate, etc).

Being completely new to WordPress, I’m wondering if you have any recommendations which e-commerce would be reliable, and allow me to make these modifications? The only payment processor we plan on using is Paypal, however we would need to also allow for sponsors to indicate they will be sending payment via cheque.

Any suggestions appreciated. While new to WordPress, I have a background in software development, so if necessary I can do some development to make it happen.
