• Hello,

I am wanting to build a website that allows you to select a date which causes content to dynamically generate on the page. This is to facilitate a complex liturgical prayer cycle which has variations throughout the year based in part on fixed calendar dates, moveable dates relative to Easter, the day of the week, and the week of the year. There are several variables to consider. I am willing to put in the time to have this pre-programmed, assuming it is even possible.

As an example, much of the text would be the same each day, but at certain sections of certain prayers, there would be a “service variable” section that pulls text from another prayer book (or in this case, another data field?) before returning to the main text.

Is this something that would be possible on a WordPress website?

Thank you kindly for any assistance you can provide.

Hi there! What an interesting challenge! Let’s see if we can help you figure this out.

If I am hearing you correctly, it sounds like:
    1. Users should be able to select a date
    2. Selecting a date should trigger a text display
    3. That text display should be dynamic, i.e. populate based on several variables/data fields
    4. The displayed text might be similar, and only sections of text might be dynamically populated

Does that capture your use case correctly?

    Some questions:
    1. Do you have an existing website?
    2. Do you have an idea of how many data fields you will need based on your use case?

Not too long ago, I worked on a page on a WordPress site that used complex data fields and relationships to create a searchable, interactive table that displayed dynamic results. So to answer your direct question, “Is this something a WordPress site can do?” That’s an easy yes. I’ve done it. BUT– It may not be easy to accomplish, I relied on a team of data scientists and developers.

I might be able to help provide some pointers on what WordPress can do if you can share some additional information.

    Best of luck!

    Hi Santana,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Yes, your four points do a good job of capturing my use case.

    In response to your questions:

    1. No, I do not have an existing website.
    2. As for the number of data fields, I would venture to guess a half dozen at a minimum, comprised of the following: Calendar Date, Date Relative to Easter, Day of the Week, Number of Weeks since the prior Easter, and Class of the Day (would be a numerical ranking). Somehow, the system would need to be able to return which special feast, if applicable, is being commemorated on a given day. I don’t know if that would be a single data field or a separate table to lookup altogether.

Let me know if I can provide any other clarifications. If you would like to provide any further advice, I would appreciate it, but don’t spend too much of your time on this, as I am not certain I would undertake a project like this at this point in time.

    Ryan
