I’m posting this for anyone who is wondering if Duplicator will work on Hostgator.com. I don’t need help, this is for your information(FYI).

    Successfully Used Duplicator on Hostgator:
I just successfully moved a small 5-6 page WordPress website to a shared hosting account and placed the WordPress website in the primary domain.

Duplicator Warning About Installing in an Empty Directory:
A warning is given in the Duplicator instructions to install the package in an empty directory. This caused me some anxiety because there were several subdirectories located in the public_html directory that I wanted to install the package into. Those subdirectories were created when subdomains and Add-On domains were set up on the hosting account. For some reason Hostgator places a subdirectory in the public_html directory that corresponds to each subdomain and Add-On domain. I wondered what would happen to those subdirectories and their associated settings on the web server when I ran Installer.php. I really didn’t want to mess up my client’s hosting account, but I needed to get the website up and running immediately. I made backups in almost every way possible that Hostgator allows. I contacted Hostgator support to ask them if the subdirectories in the public_html directory were deleted and I restored them with their content, would the subdirectories work normally again. I explained that I was concerned about the connection between the web server settings and the subdirectories. Hostgator support indicated that the web server settings would be stable and that if I restored the subdirectories with their content, they would function normally again. This helped to set my mind at ease. I decided to run the Installer.php file and see what would happen. To my relief, Duplicator ran smoothly and appears to have installed the WordPress website correctly.

    Technical Setup:

    • Hostgator Baby Plan
    • WordPress Version 3.6.1
    • Modified Child Theme of Coraline Theme by Automattic
    • Scheme Options of White color scheme with Full Width(no sidebars) layout

    Activated Plugins:

    1. Add Meta Tags
    2. Add This Social Bookmarking Widget
    3. Child Themify
    4. Duplicator
    5. Google Analytics for WordPress

    Disclaimer:
I’m sure that the instructions given by the developer of Duplicator to install the package in an empty directory are there for very good reasons. I do not mean to contradict the warning given by the Duplicator developer. I would not assume that because I had success, that you will too. Your situation is most likely, a little different. You assume all risk in using Duplicator on Hostgator. I’m merely providing my experience. Use your own judgement.

    Thank you
Thank you to the developer of Duplicator for creating it.

  • Hey MeOnWrdPrs,

Thanks for providing the details! The main reason the instructions mention to work with an empty directory, is because there is the possibility that it could overwrite what is in the current directory if that exact same directory/file already exists in the package.zip. In your case you probably didn’t have any conflicts so nothing was overwritten. How you did it is not an issue at all, and usually performed by more advanced IT users…

    Cheers~
