Hi I have a wordpress site on https://www.bequiablog.com and I would like to have that same one on a different domain name (running on the same server). I have already copied and made a new name for the database. What else should I do? Is it even possible for me to do that?

  • I don’t think that’s possible. If you are running the site on one server with one db and the same one on another server with a different db, you’ll have to maintain both sites and make changes to both. You would be better off using a domain redirect or cloaking the site. I know that with dreamhost, you can redirect a domain name, mirror an existing one or cloaked it.

I agree, there is no reason to duplicate the wp installation and database if you want it to be the exact same. You would run into a lot of issues when updating one and then not the other….better off to use the redirect.

Thanks Guys for the good info! I know whats a redirect but then I wouldn’t gain benefits in search listings from the new great domain name I got (grenadineislands.info). I would like to run it on that, is there a way to do it?

What’s the difference between cloaking and a redirect? What would you suggest in order for me to be able to run the site on that domain. If cloaking allows that will I benefit from it in searches…?

You should be clear on one primary thing.

Are you planning to continue maintaining your blog using both the domains (that is, two identical blogs), or, simply transfer the existing blog to a different domain name and start running it on the new domain only.

If you can clearly spell it out, appropriate solution can be offered.

Thanks kichu, I would like to have the same blog using both of the domains. If I could do that without having to host both separately, it would be great!

If you are keen on preferring one particular domain name for your blog, then use it for hosting the blog and running it, so that search engines respect it. You use the other domain as a “parked” domain and point it to the main domain through your web server’s control panel. That way redirection is done smoothly.

Ask the sysadmin of your web host for parked domain stuff.

Otherwise you can do redirection manually.
