duplicate posts in google site: search

  • Hey everyone – I have a new (June 3) site that has about 30 posts and three pages. When I do a site:mysite.com search, it returns 60 results. Some of the posts are duplicated under different categories and some have been moved to an archive, but I didn’t set up an archive. Is this a theme-specific thing? How do I set it up to just show one version of the post? (There were eight posts in the trash so I emptied them today and I realize they probably won’t get removed until Google recrawls the site.)

    Also – where are the actual posts? I thought they’d be in wp-content, but there’s nothing there.

  • Your content is in the database.
    I really don’t think that there’s anything wrong with the Google search.
    Your posts will appear on the category page, single posts and also the main blog which is normal.

    Thanks – I appreciate your help and don’t want to seem dense, but I’m not sure what you mean by the content is in the database. Where is the database? I see the images I’ve uploaded, but not the actual post pages.

    Your WordPress site uses a database to store options ( content from settings ), user info, password and all the content.

    When you installed WordPress, you had to set up a database or the hosting provider gave you a one click-install and it installed a database for you.
    This is what makes WordPress a content management system and creates a site that’s dynamic. When you go to a page, WordPress gets that page id and then makes a call to the database to see what content is associated with that page id and then display it for you.

    Duh! I didn’t think of the MySQL database I created when I did the manual install. Thanks for the explanation and will go watch that vid right now. Thanks again!!
