• Sometimes when I use Duplicate Post to Rewrite and Republish it changes the URL adding “-2”. There is no longer the original URL and when I try to change the URL back to the original it automatically adds “-2” back. This is obviously not good for SEO but I can’t figure out how to fix the problem.

    Hi @faithonview

You mentioned you used the rewrite and republish method on the duplicated post. Didn’t you have a -2 on the duplicated post before using rewrite and republish method? Kindly confirm the steps you have followed.

No I did not. It adds it. Further, even though the original no longer exists, I can’t simply change the URL to the original.

Maybe I didn’t answer your question in the way you were meaning.

On the blog post I click “Rewrite and Republish” I make some changes and then publish. For years this has simply replaced the original. In two cases now, it has removed the original and republished with “-2” added to the URL. But it will not allow me to change the URL to the original. So I am stuck with a different URL for the post.

Hopefully, that is clear enough on the process I followed.

    Hi @faithonview

I was able to replicate the scenario by following steps:

    1. Create a post and use rewrite and republish feature
    2. Once in the edit screen, change the post title so the title is not original and matches to the title of an old post
    3. Then republish it. I see -2 is being added in the URL.

So, my question is, when you edit the post in rewrite and republish mode, do you change the post title? If yes, is it possible that you have a similar post title already in your old posts which is why -2 is added on your new post?

I do not change the post title. I’ve been following the same process for several years and this is a new issue. Further, I can’t understand why it won’t let me change the URL back to the original since that URL no longer exists.

I experimented again with this. I’ve not been republishing articles for a couple of months even though that is a regular part of our process. This time it made two copies with todays publish date. One has the original address https://www.faithonview.com/creating-space-for-doubt/ the other has the address https://www.faithonview.com/creating-space-for-doubt-2/. These are both listed as having the exact same publish date and time today.

I’m going to delete the duplicate right now but this is frustrating.

Are there any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Do I need to change plug-ins?
