Silly question this but does tagging posts and images assist with external searches?

My website is about sailing. Every post is about sailing. Should I therefore tag my posts with the key words ‘sail’, ‘sailing’?

I ask this for two reasons:

    – my related articles plug-in is not being specific. It spews out any post because they are all tagged with the words ‘sail and ‘sailing’
    – does it help someone in Google searching for the word ‘sail’ or ‘sailing’.

Apologies for such a dumb question.

Yep. Each post has a number of tags, so any location is already mentioned. It’s just that my tag cloud is showing the tags ‘sail’ and ‘sailing’ as bigger than other tags. To a site visitor this is almost redundant as they know each post is about sailing.

I guess my question is more specifically about external searches and how they affect SEO, if at all.

If your blog has Sail or Sailing in the title then that’s all you really need for that. I wouldn’t even have the tag “Sail” or “Sailing” in your case.

Same reason I don’t have my name as a tag on my blog. I made a new post earlier today and that post already shows up on Google when doing a search on my name.

OK, I’m happy with that answer. I’ll not bother with the generic tags of sailing and make them more specific for each post.

    Thanks for your responses.
