• I am the webmaster for a WordPress website, Day4Ministries.com

We recently completely redesigned our website with a new theme. The redesigned site only exists on my computer and currently doesn’t have any of the posts or media from the old site.

I’m stuck with two halves of a puzzle, and I’m not exactly sure how to fit them together.

    Any ideas?

  • Zip up the new theme on your local machine and then login to the WordPress admin on the old site to upload the new theme.

To upload, go to Appearence-> Themes -> Install Themes tab and click the upload link at top. Then browse to the zip file of the new theme on your local machine and upload.

    Then activate the new theme.

Now your site should have your new theme with all the content from the existing (old) site.

    Cool, thanks bemdesign.

For pages I’ve built for the new site, I can use the Export tool, but what about things I’ve done in plugins (e.g. sliders, contact forms, etc.)?

Mark down which plugins you need (and what settings they have) and then install them on the old site.

You can either zip up the plugins locally and upload and install them similar to your theme using the Plugin section’s “Add New” button up at top. Or just FTP in to your site and upload the particular plugin folders for said plugins up to your wp-content/plugin directory.

Then turn them on and configure them. I’d suggest uploading and configuring your plugins first before importing your page content in case some of your pages use features provided by these plugins.

Will that move over actual plug in data as well?

I’ve made a few sliders with animations and multiple layers which would be a pain to have to recreate.

No – the configurations for your plugins you will need to rebuild on the actual WordPress on the server.

Unless the plugins’ create custom post types in which case these custom post types may be exportable via the WordPress export tool.I know some slideshows treat it as a custom post type.

At any rate, plan on rebuilding your plugin configurations in your WordPress site on the actual server.

There is a way to work around all this but it would require exporting your local database and merging it into the live site database but this rife with danger and as you already noted that you have content on your server-side WordPress that you want to keep, I wouldn’t recommend it.
