My clients prefer not to connect the plugin via a Google account (as it asks for a *lot* of permissions and they use Analytics for reports, so have no need to see reports in WordPress).

When both UA and GA4 codes are entered via the manual tracking boxes, every time a page is loaded, two page_view events are sent to GA4.

I’m not sure if this is always the case (I’m sure it worked in the past), but this is of course very bad and feels like a major bug.

If it’s intentional, there should be a clear warning that entering both codes will break Analytics, rather than this behaviour.

But ideally, both codes can be used without unnecessary permissions / reports showing up.

    Hi @smerriman,

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve encountered an issue on your site while trying to use MonsterInsights!

Having multiple pageviews definitely sounds like an odd issue. Normally this is caused by an extra tracking snippet being inserted into your website while MonsterInsights is being used. If possible, we’d like to take a closer look at what’s going on, to see if we can offer any assistance from our end, or point you in the right direction.

When you get the chance, could you reach out to us at https://www.monsterinsights.com/lite-support/?

Or if you’d prefer, you can try to locate the extra tracking snippet by following our guide here: https://www.monsterinsights.com/docs/how-to-find-duplicate-google-analytics-tracking-codes-in-wordpress/

Our manual tracking option is meant to be a temporary workaround while authentication or tracking issues are being resolved. We typically recommend users of MonsterInsights to fully complete the Setup Wizard to get the full use of the reporting and tracking features we provide. If the Setup Wizard is not completed, reports will not be accessible at Insights ? Reports and some tracking features will not work as expected.

I understand there is concern about the permissions required to use MonsterInsights. In case it helps, MonsterInsights asks only for the permissions needed to work seamlessly with your Google Analytics property. As an example, this is especially important for GA4 properties, where the requested permissions enable us to automatically create custom definitions for you that are needed for the advanced tracking and reporting we implement. Without it, some advanced tracking features in GA4 will not work as expected.

For more information about the permissions we request, please see our guide here: https://www.monsterinsights.com/docs/google-permissions-for-oauth/

That being said, if you’d prefer to remove the access to your Google Analytics after trying with MonsterInsights to get connected, we’ve found some steps from Google’s managing third-party apps & services guide you can try taking here, however, please know this may prevent MonsterInsights from working as expected in the situation where a token expires, or there are Google Analytics syntax or API changes.

    Thank you!

There is no extra tracking snippet. You can replicate this on a default WP installation – add Analytics and fill both the manual tracking fields.

Debugging the results in Analytics will show two page views events going to the GA4 code.

    Hi @smerriman,

Did you by any chance use the GA4 setup assistant within Google Analytics when you created the GA4 property?

We have found there is a link that is created between the GA4 and UA property when using this particular method that can cause a duplicate pageview and other events to be created.

Can you please disable this with the following steps:
    1. While logged in to your Google Analytics account, click Admin
    2. Make sure you have selected the associated UA property within the Property column
    3. Once on the UA property click GA4 Setup Assistant
    4. Under Connected property, hit Disconnect
    5. Click continue on the dialogue box that appears.

Once you’ve done that there should no longer be any duplicates produced for your page views.

Do let us know if you run into any further issues.

    Thanks,

    Hi @tharg3,

    I’ve the same problem.

Double page_view and some double events (e.g. click).

I disconnected the GA4 property but the problem persists.

    Thanks,
