Dropdown menu’s

I’m developing a theme from scratch. I have set up my main menu by registering it in my functions.php file, but I notice that my submenu’s are not set up as a dropdown. Is this something I have to code myself? Or do I have to add arguments to my wp_nav_menu($args);?
