Drop subdirectories when redirecting

I’m trying to set up a redirect where everything from https://www.website.com/catalog/ and all subdirectories, so https://www.website.com/catalog/xyz and so on get sent to https://www.newsite.com however I can’t get it to drop the subdirectories so https://www.website.com/catalog/123 gets sent to https://www.newsite.com/123 not just https://www.newsite.com

Currently my redirect is:
^/catalog*
which gets sent to the different domain.
