"drop in plugin"

    I am new to WordPress so I have question.

    Under plugins I have a “drop in plugin” called “install.php”
    What is it? The file does not appear under plugins in the FTP file manager but is located under wp-content.

    The reason for my question is I have disabled all other plugins to try and resolve some theme issues. I have loaded and unloaded several themes before trying to decide on the best option for my site and loaded and unloaded many plugins for the same reason.

    Is the install.php part of the WordPress program or has it been installed by one of the previously installed themes or plugins?
