• Hello,
i am new to word press, and started building a site in 3.4 last week

I chose a theme (Custom Community) and the drop down menus do not work
The main menu is there, but the drop down categories do not show up, or they show up in the main menu (without them being hidden)
I thought it was an issue with the theme, but I downloaded a plug in to make a drop down menu, but that doesn’t work either

I created the main menu, by setting up the static pages i want in the menu, and putting the pages I want to be in the drop down (rather than the main menus) by putting the appropriate main pages as the parent
The main menu does appear, but the drop downs do not

Am I doing something wrong, or are the old themes and plugins for drop down menus are just not working well with 3.4, or something else?

  • This theme has two menu locations, which one are you referring to?

i don’t know that the cc theme works that way, you have to use custom menus, you can drag menu items under each other to make parent/child relationships.

Hi Michael – i tried it with both menus, and it doesn’t work

Deepbevel — In Menu (in the Dashboard), it allows you to choose a parent
So I thought I had already set up the parent/child relationship… (but it’s not a drag/drop — am I looking in the wrong place?)

In Custom Menu from Dashboard, it asks me to type in the Label, URL, and CSS Class to create new buttons
I didnt’ entirely know how to do that, especially to make some of them be part of the main menu, and some of be part of a drop down that is a subcategory of an item in the main menu…

look for “Changing the Order of Menu Items and Creating Sub-Menus”

Hi I figured it out — thank you to both of you
I watched a youtube tutorial, and it explained visually what deepbevel was trying to say
From Dashboard, I had to go into Menu (not Custom Menu), and then create a menu, select the items that go in it, and then click and drag the items i wanted slightly over to the right to make the parent/child relationship
Thank you so much to both of you
Hope you have a great weekend

Why can’t I get that to work… the when i drag it over, slight to the right, it becomes a child – but as soon as i save, it jumps right back as a parent??

what browser are you using? is java enabled? also try disabling plugins, it’s not uncommon for one’s that use jquery to mess with custom menus.

I’m using IE9, how do check if java is enabled and how do i disable plugins?

in ie it’s tools/manage add ons.

you can disable your plugins from the plugins page. Do it one at a time and check for joy. or disable all and reactivate one at a time, checking for joy after each.

Disabling plugins doesn’t remove them, just turns them off so you can reactivate them. To remove them they must be deleted.

Now I’ve tried disabling them all, and they still just jump bag as a parent when i save…

I just tried it in cc with the previous version wp. It works. I’ve delayed updating because I don’t know cc is 100% compatible, they haven’t updated.

try the twenty ten or twenty eleven theme to test this.

If that’s the issue, you’ll have to wait for a cc update, use another theme, or roll back to the previous wp.

I just don’t understand why it worked yesterday, but not today?

maybe I’m confused, I don’t see in the thread where you say you were already using custom menus, thought you just discovered that today.

opps, you didn’t start the thread! sorry I confused you with the original poster.
