drop down menu not working with latest wordpress version 5.5–en_GB

    After updating to WordPress version 5.5–en_GB the drop-down menus have stopped working. When I revert to a backup version of the site, using the previous version of WordPress the site works fine. At the moment I have kept the site using WordPress 5.4.2. The site has a bespoke theme that has been running for 10 years.
