Dreamhost Instructions vs. www.remarpro.com instructions

  • Hi,

    I wanted to upgrade from 1.2 to 1.5. I came here for information and backed up my database using the instructions here. I also looked at the way in which dreamhost suggested that you upgrade. It is different than the steps outlined here. They say to set up a separate folder to install the upgrade and make sure everything is working there before copying files to the location of the your current blog. This seemed to make sense so I did the install in a separate directory with the same database. I’m having one little problem. When I try to get into the wpadmin on the 1.5 version it logs me into my current blog, the 1.2, in the other directory.

    Any helpful hints?

  • In a separate directory ? Why ? Dreamhost need to get a clue.

    Your problem is probably that the siteurl and home values in the database are pointing to where the 1.2 blog is.

    Quite why DH think that you need to break things to upgrade is beyond me.

    Why Dreamhost is still a “recommended host” is beyond me.

    Installing WP into a new directory isn’t exactly an upgrade, is it? Unless you install 1.2 in that directory, then run upgrade. All of which is pretty pointless.

    Dreamhost is still a recommended host because they have created their own one-click installer for WordPress that is far superior to Fantastico, and because they are willing to donate a small amount to WordPress whenever a user signs up via the link on the recommended hosts page.

    You can’t penalize a company because they provide poor WordPress support. No hosting company is responsible for providing support for third-party products. Providing support for WordPress is our responsibility, not Dreamhost’s.

    Agreed, but DH should not be asking customers to break their URLs.

    Wouldn’t it be better to recommend improvements to DH’s instructions? It sounds like they have good intent by instructing their customers to do a test upgrade first to see if anything breaks before upgrading their live site.

    For the most part what they say seems like a good idea except for the fact that you should also create a test database and point your test install to that. Does that let you into the admin section of the test install so you can change the base URL’s or not? It would be messy to have to do that in the database for people that aren’t well versed in that sort of thing.

    Hang on if they have a one click installer wouldn’t they be able to modify that to create a test install with the latest version with everything setup for you? It would be a bit of work to set that up but it would be pretty sweet.
