• Downloading the WordPress CVS with Tortoise
    ? 2003 Cena Mayo
    version: 1 (13 August 2003)
Downloading the CVS version of WordPress is incredibly easy and (depending on your connection speed) can be done in a matter of minutes. Please feel free to email me at cenaATcox-internetDOTcom with suggestions for revisions, corrections, or general feedback. A graphical version will soon be available on my website.
    1. Download the latest version of TortoiseCVS for Windows at https://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/tortoisecvs/TortoiseCVS-1.4.4.exe
The project page can always be found at https://www.tortoisecvs.org/.
    2. Install Tortoise according to instructions.
    3. Now comes the fun part. Tortoise is going to create a new directory for the WordPress CVS. I’ll use my own desktop for the purposes of this example. Simply right-click on your desktop, and you should see new options in the menu that pops up. Click on ‘CVS Checkout…’ and we can get started configuring Tortoise.
    4. Fill in the configuration screen with the following:
    Server: cvs.sourceforge.net
    Repository folder: /cvsroot/cafelog
    Module: wordpress
The ‘Protocol’ and ‘User name’ fields can be filled by clicking on the right arrow, and the CVSROOT will be populated automatically.
    5. Clicking on ‘OK’ will immediately start the CVS download. (Note: occasionally you will get an error message to the effect that Tortoise was unable to download from the server. This is an error generated by Sourceforge, not Tortoise, so just ignore it and try again later.)
    6. The folder containing the WP CVS will be highlighted in green, and WP can be uploaded to your server and installed normally.
    7. Future updates to the CVS can be downloaded by simply right-clicking on your WP CVS folder, and choosing the ‘CVS Update’ option from the menu.
    8. And that’s it! Enjoy. ??

  • Good job Cena. Do you think we could put this in the docs section?

I would be honored, sir. ??

Is there a problem with the CVS server on SourceForge or is it something I’m doing wrong? I get this error message:
“cvs [checkout aborted]: Error reading from server cvs.sourceforge.net: 0: No such file or directory”
Using anonymous as username with no password. Everything matches the config specified above.
    Thanks for the tutorial though!

Sometimes you have to try again for it to work, as the Sourceforge CVS server gets highly loaded sometimes.

Thanks. I’m not a programmer, but this is one awesome system for tracking changes. Wow. Is it okay to use “anonymous” as login, or is it better to use a username for tracking purposes? If username, how do you establish one (and password) ?

Anonymous logins are fine (and recommended.)

Thanks a lot Cena, makes it a lot easier than using the Web CVS and downloading files seperately… not to mention that the Web CVS is often behind about 24 hours… Thanks again.

Another good CVS client for Windows is Gruntspud available from sourceforge.
It’s Java based and while less newbie friendly than Tortoise it’s still very good.

Cena, thank you! I never could figure it out, now I know how. ??

Mah Gawd, SG! You’re just now getting around to that, when I wrote it in..(checks) August?? Glad it helped. ??

What about that pictured version… *g

*LOL* Cena! I think that dasfreak sent it up to the newly posted, which is why I saw it. ??

Cheers Cena, for the first time ever I now have a shiny new CVS version of wordpress

Christian, here it is :): https://tartary.f2o.org/wordpress
Might as well make it my very first entry on my shiny new blog! ??
Thanks to everyone for your kind comments.

    Thanks.
Going to set a link in/on (<= how do you say? I’m not that good at English…) the wiki… ??
