    Hello,

We’re selling our own software in our online store where the download is only available after signing in to an external service (outside of the store). When using the URL to this service (directed to sign-in prior to download), the external link we provide for such a product in WooCommerce results in the customer’s browser simply downloading a non-descript file called “download” without a file extension that has some HTML in it.

So in short, is there a requirement for the external URL to point to an actual file in the case of a downloadable product? If so, is there any way around it?

A quick response would be appreciated. ??

    Hi there!

It is possible, but you’ll have to change a setting that will affect how downloads are handled across your site.

Go to WP Admin ? WooCommerce ? Settings ? Products ??Downloadable products, and change the File download method to Redirect only (insecure).

With that setting in place, the button to download the file will simply link through to the URL specified in the File URL field of your product.

Selecting the method above is not recommended when you actually offer other files to download too through. Read more about the pros and cons of the different methods here:

    Hi @eastofwest !

Thank you very much for the help! This solves our problem and seeing as all of our downloadable products are behind a separate login in an external service either way, this will suit our needs perfectly.

    Thanks again!
