    Hi, David

First, I think this is a really sweet plug-in, so intuitive to use, and I will definitely be donating to you and/or buying the Premium.

I’m puzzled by something, though. I backed up five sites with the “manual” method. On the first site, let’s call it ABC.com, it went into backup mode right away, and sent the backup to my email that I had designated. Then I also downloaded the backup to my computer.

But on my next four sites, when I started the backup, it told me to wait 10 seconds, then visit the site. Everything still looked okay, it showed the backup file had been created. I downloaded it to my computer. However, nothing showed up in my email. I even backed up one of them twice, double-checking to make sure I had input my email address correctly in “Enter the Address here to have the report sent,” but no joy. Only the first backup for “ABC.com” went to email; all the others did not.

To test it, I set it on one site to send to email and copy the backup to remote storage, which resulted in two emails being sent for that site. However, neither of them has the same format as the email that was sent for the first site.

My apologies for the lengthy explanation. I basically want to download the backup, and also get a copy of the backup sent to my email. How do I do this?

    TIA ??

    Hi Celeste,

    I think I followed that…

UpdraftPlus doesn’t currently allow you to send a backup to two separate destinations; so if you select a cloud method, then the email will only contain a notification of the backup (not the backup itself). That’s a planned ‘premium’ feature… give me about 3 weeks…

Secondly, when you had your backup method as ’email’ and some didn’t arrive, it’s almost certainly (as noted hopefully on the settings screen when you choose ’email’ – let me know if the note isn’t there) because the email ends up being too big, and your mail server rejects it so that it doesn’t arrive. Unfortunately UpdraftPlus can’t know when this happens (once it’s entered the email pipes, there’s no way of finding out what happened to it further on if it later gets dropped).

I think that answers all your questions?

    Hi, David

Yes, I think that answer helps. These are very small sites, though, hardly any content on them, so I don’t think the size affected them being sent to gmail. In fact, the one that went to gmail is the largest site ??

Is there any reason why on one site it went into immediate backup mode and the other sites it asked me to wait 10 seconds and then load a page?

Can you post a link to your premium plugin? I’ve been looking for it and can’t find it.

    Thanks!

    Hi Celeste,

Have you checked your GMail spam folder? If it’s not there, then please send me a log file from a backup that you did not receive… (click on the link next to ‘download backups and logs’ … then email the file to [email protected]).

I haven’t yet got a website for the premium plugin, but there’s a one-page job… hopefully the rest will arrive in about a week: https://updraftplus.com

“Is there any reason why on one site it went into immediate backup mode and the other sites it asked me to wait 10 seconds and then load a page?” – I’m not sure what things you clicked… but if you save settings with a schedule (e.g. daily) then it will immediately schedule a backup in the next few minutes. At all times, clicking ‘Backup Now’ performs a backup, including the notice about waiting 10 seconds.

    Hi, David

My apologies for the delay, busy workweek.

I think the regular UpdraftPlus plugin will work fine, as I don’t have any multisite installations, so I’ll make a donation for the “freebie.”

Yes, I clicked “Backup Now” and did not schedule anything. I’ll have to test the email feature again, later. As long as it backs up and I can download, that’s fine. Of course I have to remember to backup my computer, too ??

I’m pretty new to this, so if I backup a site from one hosting service, can I restore it on another hosting service when the domain is transferred to the new host? I understand that the theme and plugins will have to be reinstalled. My problem is that on one hosting service all my WordPress sites got hacked and my sites went down, so I don’t know what’s in the database and whether it’s safe to restore or not. I backed up while the sites were still up and running, but the sites had been hacked before and then fixed by the techs, which is what led me to looking for a good backup plugin to begin with! I’m in the process of moving all my domains over to Hostgator from the other service.

I’m just curious as to exactly what it is that’s stored in the database. My understanding is that if I install a fresh version of WordPress on let’s call it abc123.com on Hostgator, upload the theme and plugins, and then I can restore from the database that I backed up from the other hosting service, all is well? Hmm. How do I properly transfer the database from my computer into my WordPress back end?

If you don’t want to address that issue, it’s okay.

    Thanks ??

    Hi Celeste,

I’m hoping to make restoration easier in future versions. However, for now, it involves:
    1) Unzip WordPress into your new location (but don’t install a fresh copy)
    2) Unzip the 4 zip files from UpdraftPlus (plugins, themes, uploads, others) into the “wp-content” directory of your new WordPress installation
    3) Install the database into the database server of your new installation, using a tool such as phpMyAdmin
The third step is one that non-technical users find a bit tricky, though it’s very easy “if you know how”. However, there are tens of thousands of WordPress professionals who would carry out those three steps for you for less than $50. It’s just a matter of deciding whether to invest in learning yourself, which takes time, or paying someone else.

    Hi, David

The transferred sites already have a fresh install, so that would keep me from doing the restoration per your instructions.

These sites have so little content, most of which is from experimenting with the theme options and stuff. For $50, it’s easier to rebuild them. I think I can figure out installing the database, but might as well keep it simple and just build from scratch. Every time I build a new site with WordPress, I learn a bit more.

Monday is the day that I can donate, which I’ll certainly do, not just for the plugin but for the great follow-up information. It is very much appreciated ??

    Hi Celeste,

Thank you… you just need to be aware when dealing with the database that if you restore a database, then basically you have replaced your site; everything not in files (your site setup settings, records of what plugins/theme is activated, all plugin settings) is in your database.
