    Howdy,

So this message appears to be an issue with HostGator not updating their servers, and unfortunately my experience with their support was the same as everyone else’s, which is to say they offered basically no support (since it’s a shared server they basically just said there’s nothing they could do and tried to insist they didn’t support some plugins despite my repeated notes that it was not a plugin issue).

I’m wondering if there’s anything else I can do, any actions I can take with HostGator, or if anyone has done anything else to fix this. I saw this workaround in another thread, but I’m a bit wary installing a plugin this way for a slew of reasons, and I don’t want to make things worse.

Any other ideas? It’s fairly critical as it’s preventing me from updating WordPress, plugins, or themes. I basically can’t connect my installation to WordPress.

    Thanks!

  • Is your site using SSL? If so, are you sure your certification is up to date?

I think this message appears when the certificate has expired for SSL.

No the site isn’t using ssl. From all the research I’ve done just googling the error it’s a host gator server issue every time.

Let me try another way. Is there any major concern with installing a plugin manually via just downloading the files and loading into WordPress?

I went ahead and just used the workaround I mentioned in the first post and I can now install and update plugins again. I came across numerous other instances of this issue when researching, and every single time it was either self-hosted or a problem with Host Gator. And every single time, HostGator support essentially spent their efforts trying to show it wasn’t an issue with their servers, even though the proposed fix was incredibly simple (restarting apache or updating cURL on the server). My experience was similar. So, if you’re reading this and with HostGator, my suggestion would be to use the workaround and move to a new hosting provider as soon as you are able.

    wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hostGator!!!!!!!!

Thank you, planetude, for the link.. This worked!

I have shared hosting with Hostgator as well.

Got off with live chat before seeing this. Asking them to restart apache is like asking them to donate a kidney. All live support did was submit my request to a tech admin.

I’m pretty sure HG’s final response is going to be plugin/wp issue like everybody elses.

Surprised HG is not on this!

But this thread solved my prob.. Thanks!

Could not update 3 week old wordpress install, nor the basic themes, or any of the 5 plugins I installed.

Had to do it all manually through FTP – boooooo

Glad it helped someone else! Yeah it’s really kind of amazing that Host Gator can keep getting approached with the same problem and keep deflecting over and over…

Oh well, I was helping out for someone else who I advised to move away from them. Seems this problem is mostly exclusive of them (at least I’ve never seen it mentioned to happen with any other host).

So until now what is the solution for this issue , Do we have to upload them manually ,

After i have contact HostGator they say ( You are on shared hosting we cannot manually restart the Apache service because that
would affect other accounts. The service itself restarts every 10 minutes.)

i will move soon from them ??

U can use the workarround provided by planetude.
it is realy a good solution that I am already using now with hostgator host.

Thanks so much, planetude. I had this same HostGator problem for years. I’ve contacted them once and maybe even twice to resolve it but they just said the fixes they can implement are only temporary because they outdate very quickly. I didn’t understand what they meant but I ended up getting my site working in the end and I didn’t have time to look into it further. Since then I’ve just ignored plugin updates, waiting for a bunch of them to accumulate before contacting them again for this temporary fix. But your plugin worked like a charm!

Here are some quick instructions that would have helped me when I came upon this thread: you must do a manual installation because the plugin isn’t currently available through WP’s internal collection. Download it from the link above and extract the zip file to your desktop, then drop the whole “http-curl-transport-last” folder into your wp-content/plugins directory via FTP (Filezilla is great). Then just activate it from your WP Plugins page and presto, you can now update your plugins : )

Hi arungv, what did you mean by “replace the WordPress core files?” How would I go about doing that? Thanks

    Hey All,

I, too, have been experiencing the error noted in the subject line for quite some time. I was trying to get iThemes Sync activated and talking on a client website without success. The afore-mentioned error message kept coming up.

HostGator support has been unresponsive on the issue. Finally bit the bullet and installed the Pronamic plugin workaround and voila, success.

Error gone and now I can get the site to talk to iThemes Sync.

    Happy camper.

    Thanks, planetude, for the link.

    Hello Again,

I wanted to post a quick update here in case it helps anyone. We recently received a report from this post and while troubleshooting, found that in one case, it appeared this was an issue with a plugin conflict. After running a full backup then disabling all plugins, the WordPress updated to the latest version just fine.

After WordPress completed updating the core files, we re-enabled the plugins and found that all plugins also began updating without error. For others experiencing this trouble we would recommend :

    1. Generate a full backup.
    2. Temporarily disable plugins or set the plugins folder to 000 permissions.
    3. Attempt the WordPress update.
    4. If successful, re-enable plugins/set back permissions and attempt to update those as well.

More information on setting permissions with HostGator is available here : https://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/how-to-change-permissions-chmod-of-a-file

If this doesn’t work for anyone on HostGator experiencing this trouble, please reach out to me via [email protected] (Attention : Jonathan H) and we’ll be glad to look for alternative solutions.
