Download counter not working with e-mail option

Instead of the inline link provided for download, I chose the download to be provided via email. Though this option works fine, and the link is sent as attachment, the download counter does not populate. The counter only increments when a user downloads using the inline_link option.
I would like the functionality of counter increment when a site visitor is sent the attachment to his/her email.
