• I recently upgraded two of my blogs that were running on 2.1 to 2.6. Now I’m seeing the dreaded “categories missing” problem on both of them. Permalinks and everything else works fine. I don’t know a lot about databases, I’m a graphic designer. I’ve been reading that I should have upgraded to 2.3 first, then moved on to 2.6. Well, it’s too late, I’ve already installed 2.6. Will I do even more damage if I try to install 2.3 now and then install 2.6 again over that? What kind of process is involved in “downgrading?” If anyone has a tutorial or experience with this I would appreciate it.

    Thanks!

    Yes.

If you followed the instructions for the upgrade – then you have a backup copy of your database for WP 2.1 and the 2.1 WP files.

Using this guide: Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup you go back to your original (2.1) pre-upgrade state… and from there you can do the upgrade in steps.

Thank you so much! I did indeed make backups. Should I delete the WP 2.6 files before I restore my DB backup? For example, would this be okay:

    1. Delete WP 2.6 files
    2. Restore WP 2.1 DB
    3. Upload WP 2.3 files
    4. Run WP 2.3 installation
    5. Make WP 2.3 backups
    6. Upload WP 2.6 files
    7. Install WP 2.6

    ??

    More or less….
    I’d include the followings:
2a. Upload the WP 2.1. fikles and check that everything works.

    4. NO! – never run install. ONLY upgrade.php!

Thanks again! Sorry, I did mean upgrade, not install, oops. I’ll add in your 2a step and give this a try when I get home from work tonight. ??
