Wow thanks for the quick response. Where exactly is the .htaccess file? I am not too versed in this, can you explain a little bit more.

    Thanks!

Ok I just read that website and a few others about htaccess. The one big question I have is what exactly do I put in the htaccess file? Do I just put:
    DirectoryIndex
    index.php
    index.html
    index.htm

in a blank file and save as .htaccess?

Another question I have is that I am currently running my site – kidsmatterinc.org and I have added wordpress as in a folder – kidsmatterinc.org/wordpress. I want to continue with the old site until I make the new site. First, is this the right thing to do or do I need to host the wordpress site somewhere else first? Second, will the .htaccess work in this folder?

Thank you so much for your help!
    Megan
