Don’t want to allow saved payments, but Subscriptions requires tokenization?

My client does not want to allow saved payment methods and automatic payments. I turned off automatic payments in Subscriptions and unchecked (disabled) tokenization in the Payments tab. I get this message in the Woo admin screens: “Square is inactive for subscription transactions. Please enable tokenization to activate Square for Subscriptions.” and a slightly different one on the list of Payment Methods on the Payments tab: “You must enable tokenization for this gateway in order to support automatic renewal payments with the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension.”
A member noticed that their card is being saved, though I have automatic payments turned off and our terms & conditions say we don’t save their cards. Is is possible to sell memberships with the Subscriptions extension and NOT save members’ credit cards? If possible, what else must I do? Thank you.
